I paid a visit to the stunning Paycocke’s House in Coggeshall yesterday. Built around 1500 by cloth merchant Thomas Paycocke, it’s full of the most intricate wood carvings and paneling—true signs of pride, craftsmanship, and artistry.
It left me thinking: why have we lost this level of detail and ornamentation in the homes we build today? So much of our architecture now feels like bland boxes—stripped of soul, texture, and meaning.
I believe there’s a way to bring that richness back. Not by copying the past, but by taking inspiration from it—honouring the craftsmanship, the materials, and the human touch that once defined our homes.
If you’re thinking of buying a renovation project or working on a period property—whether you need help with the interior design, or you’re planning an extension that needs to be done sensitively—I’d love to be part of the journey.
At Zing Interior Architecture, I specialise in blending old and new with care, creativity, and deep respect for heritage. If that sounds like what you’re looking for, let’s talk.
