LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS IN SEWARD COUNTY, NEBRASKA HAVE A FINANCIAL INCENTIVE TO STOP RENTAL CARS
If you are traveling through Nebraska in a rental car, you should expect to be stopped in Seward County, near Seward, Nebraska. Law enforcement officers stop many vehicles traveling through Seward county for minor traffic infractions. After stopping the vehicle, an officer will ask the driver to accompany him back to the police car. After running a background check that includes all arrests related to drugs, the officer will hand back the license and registration and say, “You’re free to go”.
But it’s a trick, you are not really free to go.
The cop will say you’re free to go as a ruse to make you feel more comfortable and more importantly, avoid the requirement of Miranda warnings.
The cop will then tell you he wants to ask you a few more questions:
Do you have any drugs in the car?
Do you have large sums of money in the car?
Do you have guns in the car?
The officer may also tell you that having a small amount of marijuana in your car is “no big deal”.
This has all been a setup, a plan to trick you into confessing you have drugs in the car.
The officer will then ask if he can search our vehicle, and if you say, “no”, he will either search it after saying he smelled marijuana or he will detain you and call a drug dog.
If something like this has happened to you, you need an experienced attorney to represent you.
