Should I still be concerned about ticks in the Winter? Yes, ticks are active in the Winter, but their abundance is closely tied to the temperature. When it is around freezing ( like the few recent evenings) you will not likely run across any ticks when you are hiking or in open space with your best friend. However, when temps start to rise ticks are hiding in the grasses and ready to pounce on any dog walking past. Tick bites are most common from Spring until Fall when average temps are above 35 degrees.
What to do if you have been out hiking? Give your dog a tick check before you go inside the house. Be diligent if you went off trail, also check any sweaters or harnesses your dog(s) may have been wearing.
