Drivers are expected to be sober, alert, and paying attention to the road in order to avoid colliding with other vehicles or pedestrians. Unfortunately, 6,721 pedestrians died in 2020 in the United States in pedestrian accidents. Here are some of the most common reasons why pedestrian accidents occur:
* Driving too fast, not being able to respond in time to changing road conditions
* Texting while driving
* Ignoring traffic signs and signals such as yield signs or flashing red or yellow signals
* Driving while intoxicated
* Not yielding the right of way
* Careless and reckless driving
* Road construction that forces pedestrians off of sidewalks and onto the street or other areas where drivers may not be expecting them
* Wearing dark clothing at night
* When drivers make improper turns and go to the wrong way down a street
* Bad weather causing slick road conditions or reduced visibility
* Vehicle defects
