Why oven glass “explodes” & how to avoid it (Brooklyn & Manhattan)
Tempered glass doesn’t melt or “crack slow”—it can shatter when stress releases at once.
Common triggers
• Thermal shock: cold pan/water on hot glass, opening during broil
• Micro-chips/scratches from cookware or abrasive pads
• Blocked heat/vents (foil on the floor, oversized trays/stones)
• Self-clean’s extreme heat
• Mounting stress or a slammed/misaligned door
• Rare nickel-sulfide inclusions (manufacturing defect)
If it already shattered
1. Cut power/breaker; keep kids/pets away
2. Vacuum with a hose; then damp-wipe seals, corners, hinges
3. Replace any damaged glass/seals before using again
How to prevent a repeat
• Use metal for broil/high heat; only oven-safe glass within its rating
• Never splash water on hot glass; let it cool before cleaning
• Don’t block airflow or cover the oven floor with foil
• Handle racks gently; don’t slam the door
• Inspect for chips/cracks or loose trim and fix early
• Prefer steam/manual clean over self-clean when possible
