At this time of year, weโre getting more and more call outs where customers think theyโve got rodentsโฆ but itโs actually nesting birds getting in via tiles, soffits & guttering
The usual suspects areโฆ.
Starlings:
๐นGet in through broken tiles, vents & roof gaps
๐นVery noisy, especially early morning
๐นBuild large messy nests in loft spaces
House Sparrows:
๐นLove eaves, soffits & under tiles
๐นOften nest in groups (colonies)
๐นConstant chirping & movement
Blackbirds:
๐นLess common in roofs but will use guttering or damaged areas
๐นMore likely around lower rooflines & extensions
Why it becomes a problem:
โน๏ธBlocked gutters & downpipes
โน๏ธNesting material dragged into lofts
โน๏ธNoise mistaken for rats or mice
โน๏ธDamage around entry points
Important to know:
Under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 it is illegal to disturb or remove active nests.
That means once theyโre in and nestingโฆ you have to wait until theyโve finished
What we recommend:
๐นIdentify entry points early
๐นCarry out proofing work outside of nesting season (SeptโFeb)
๐นInstall mesh guards / bird protection
๐นPrevent it becoming a repeat issue year after year
