This morning we attended a block of apartments in the Sheffield area of South Yorkshire, where seven flats were found to be infested with German cockroaches (Blattella germanica).
Findings:
Activity confirmed in kitchens, living rooms, and bathrooms, with the highest infestation levels concentrated in food- and moisture-rich areas.
Evidence included live adults, nymph stages, faecal spotting, and empty egg cases โ clear signs of active breeding colonies.
โน๏ธA full inspection was completed across the affected flats
โน๏ธDetailed reports of findings and recommendations have now been submitted to the property managers
This short video clip was taken inside one of the fourth-floor apartments. The footage shows nymph-stage German cockroaches shortly after hatching.
During our wider inspection:
โขEmpty egg cases (oothecae) were found, confirming active breeding.
โขLarger nymph stages and adult cockroaches were present throughout the block, with particularly heavy activity noted across the seventh floor apartments.
This evidence highlights the severity and spread of the infestation, requiring an immediate block-wide riddance programme.
Note: German cockroaches are a major public health pest, capable of spreading bacteria and triggering asthma/allergies. Early intervention is essential to prevent further spread through pipe runs and shared walls.
