Urinary tract infections can be classified into three types. The type of infection depends on which part of the urinary tract is infected.
1. Urethritis: An infection of the urethra, the hollow tube that drains urine from the bladder to the outside of the body
2. Cystitis: A bacterial infection of the bladder that often spreads from the urethra
3. Pyelonephritis: A potentially serious infection of the kidneys that is usually the result of ascending infection from the bladder
