What happens if a #KidneyStone cannot be passed naturally?
The first line of treatment for small kidney stones is medical expulsive therapy — taking medication and generous amounts of water to encourage stone passage. But if that fails, or the stone is too large, more invasive interventions are warranted. After all, a stone blocking the flow of urine can damage your kidney in the long run!
Depending on the size, density, location and number of stones, a urologist may recommend one of the following minimally-invasive procedures:
- Extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (#ESWL)
- #Ureteroscopy with laser lithotripsy
- Percutaneous nephrolithotomy (#PCNL)
