Have you ever wondered what a #KidneyStone is made of?
By far the most common type of kidney stones are made up of calcium oxalate. Consuming excessive amounts of oxalate-rich foods (such as coffee, tea, nuts, beans) without drinking enough water may cause these stones to form.
Other common types of stones include calcium phosphate and uric acid stones.
Less common types of stones tend to form in specific conditions. Struvite stones, also known as “infection stones”, are caused by urease-producing bacteria infecting the upper urinary tract. Cystine stones are caused by a genetic condition where cystine is excreted in high amounts in the urine.
Sending a passed stone for analysis allows us to find out what your stone is made of and give targeted prevention advice. If old habits don’t change, there is a 50% chance of getting a stone again in the next 5-7 years!
