When we conduct a building and pest inspection, we look over EVERY aspect of the property. That includes water tanks. It was obvious there was a leak in the water tank. It was from the overflow pipe on the tank.
What also was obvious, it had been there for some time as the leak had turned mossy/mouldy green. Didn’t look good.
The purpose of the overflow pipe is that once the tank gets to near capacity the excess water can be diverted to the property’s drain system.
By having the overflow pipe not securely connected to the tank, it poses the risk the pipe could disconnect when the tank is full and if there is water continuing to pour into the tank there can be a volume of water pouring out around the tank that could make its way into the home.
We live in a locale noted for storms and major downpours. It’s great to harvest that water but you need your storage tanks to be secure to deal with a downpour.
The homeowner needed to call a plumber to fix the join between the pipe and tank.
