I contacted Totem Appliance Service to send a technician after my LG washer leaked water throughout my condo.
The technician arrived on time. Before even opening the machine, he immediately suspected that the issue was the hot-water valve. After opening the washer, he confirmed that the valve was indeed faulty. I appreciate that he was able to quickly identify the problem.
However, I was surprised by the final cost of the repair. The replacement part was approximately $58, and the repair itself took less than 45 minutes, yet I was billed $451 in total, including about $400 in labor and additional charges that were not clearly explained.
Another point that I found confusing was that the technician stated he could not disconnect or reconnect the washer’s water lines. He advised me that I would need to call a plumber or another professional to unhook and reconnect the machine in order to test it after the repair, as he said he would not be liable if anything happened.
This raises an obvious concern: if the machine cannot be connected and tested as part of the service, it is difficult to understand how the technician can fully diagnose and verify that the repair was successful. In my view, disconnecting and reconnecting the washer in order to test the repair should reasonably be considered part of the appliance service.
Given the relatively simple repair, the cost and the limitations of the service provided were unexpected and difficult to justify.
