This is the archetypal Greek Cypriot tavern, nestled in a hillside in the fairly remote village of Tochni. Cyprus is a little island, but it has these villages tucked away into the foothills, and they are easy to miss. This tavern somehow manages the contradiction of both being cosy, and large, and I cannot think of a better place to have a lunch on a wintry day - let alone on Christmas. The ambience is traditionally Cypriot, the fragrances of various grilled meats, wines and salads welcome you on entrance. The proprietor, Sofroni, is welcoming and attentive, even though there were easily a 100 people at Tochni Tavern when we had the pleasure of a meal there. The staff are equally attentive, unfailingly polite and provide service with a smile - not a common thing these days elsewhere in Europe. The food as exceptional. In a nod to the changing global landscape, there was even a chicken curry with rice - which was way better than it had a right to be, given where it was served. They had a well curated multi-course menu, which again was impressive for its thoughtfulness and care. Every Cypriot must pay a visit to this little jewel among taverns on the island, and it must absolutely be on the list of every tourist as well.

We had the most wonderful experience at this traditional Greek tavern in Tochni! The food was absolutely excellent, fresh, and truly delicious – every dish tasted like it was made with care and tradition. The service was equally impressive: warm, attentive, and genuinely welcoming, which made us feel right at home. Beyond the amazing tavern, we also had the pleasure of staying in the facilities for the weekend. The accommodation was a perfect balance of historic charm and modern comfort. The design beautifully harmonized tradition with stylish touches, creating a unique and cozy atmosphere. The pool was a fantastic bonus – clean, relaxing, and ideal for unwinding after exploring. The hospitality was second to none. From the first moment to the last, we felt like honored guests rather than just visitors. This place is truly a hidden gem that captures the soul of history and the warmth of Greek tradition. We left with full hearts, big smiles, and a promise to return soon. If you want an unforgettable taste of Cypriot-Greek tradition wrapped in comfort and charm – this is the place to be!
