What does dry rot actually look like?
One of the most telltale signs is cotton wool-like mycelium: soft, fluffy growth that appears white or cream in colour and the dry rot fruiting body at later stages of its life.
Other signs include:
· Cracked, brittle or shrinking timber
· A damp, mushroomy smell
· Rusty red spore dust near infected areas
Spotting these early can save you from the fungus growing and developing and causing serious structural damage. Dry rot can spread fast if it is left and untreated.
