“I had a damp proof course installed & replastered the wall, but now my rising damp problem has appeared on the other side of the wall.”
The reason that the other side of the wall appears damp is because the salts in the plaster that have been drawn up into the wall by the damp are hydroscopic, and therefore attract the moisture in the air to them, making a section of wall with the salts appear damp.
The other side of the wall will also contain these salts, but perhaps to a lesser degree.
It is not that the other side of the wall has now got the rising damp, but that the salts remaining in the brick could not escape through the new plaster on the freshly replastered side, so they are drawn towards the older plaster instead.
When installing a damp proof course, our recommendation is to replaster both sides of the affected wall for this very reason.
This ensures all salts are removed from the affected area and so the wall will no longer be attracting the moisture, making it look damp.
