How does Dry Rot grow in your property?
Despite its common name, dry rot actually affects damp timber.
This timber needs to have a moisture content of at least 20%.
But how can timber get to this moisture level?
A leak from a damaged or burst, which overtime gets absorbed by the timber
Increase humidity in the air without ventilation, means the moisture can get absorbed into the timber
Dry rot spores are considered omnipresent, which means they are everywhere, all the time.
The damp environment in the timbers create an ideal environment for dry rot to set up camp and grow.
Afterall, the goal of any fungus is to grow, reproduce and survive by obtaining nutrients (from your timbers).
Once it starts growing, the fungus eats up and destroys the timber and its strength and integrity, leaving a flaky, brittle, and weak piece of timber.
