Creeping Wild Rye
Elymus triticoides
IN THE GARDEN: This long-lived semi-evergreen, spreading perennial grass grows 1.5 to 4' tall. Near riverbanks, this native great for erosion control because of its rhizomatous growth habit. Also, it tolerates trampling and mowing. It has been a superstar at out-competing some invasive weeds. One of our more common riparian understory grasses, this grass stays greener into the summer than other cool-season grasses. It also provides quality waterfowl and upland bird nesting habitat.
ECOLOGICAL VALUE: Attracts birds, Deer resistant, Erosion control.
NATIVE DISTRIBUTION: Found scattered across California, this plant is often found in
Moist, often saline, meadows and understory of various woodlands. (calscape.org).
