PLANT OF THE MONTH:
Bluff lettuce
Dudleya farinosa
IN THE GARDEN: If you are looking for succulent plants Dudleyas are a top choice. This Dudleya, found naturally on sea bluffs grows about 1' tall and 1' wide. It has a variable appearance, growing from a basal rosette of wide, pointed, spade-shaped leaves. The leaves are generally very pale green but they often have edges or tips of bright colors, particularly bright reds. The plant erects a tall stem which bears a branching inflorescence with many pale to bright yellow flowers. The flowers appear from May to September. It would be an impressive addition to a rock garden and does well in a container. Make sure to give it plenty of drainage little water. It can be grown in full sun by the coast and part shade inland.
