IN THE GARDEN:
A deciduous tree that grows to 70'. Grows into the largest of North American oaks. It is also the fastest growing of our California Oaks, it can grow to 20' in 5 years. William Henry Brewer, chief botanist for the first California Geological Survey wrote "Some of these oaks were noble ones indeed. How I wish one stood in our yard at home." Deer will brows so protect when young.
ECOLOGICAL VALUE:
Attracts Butterflies and Attracts Birds.
NATIVE DISTRIBUTION:
Valley oaks are found in dense riparian forests, open foothill woodlands and valley savannas. It is most abundant in rich deep soils of valley floors below 600 meters in elevation but can also be found at elevations up to 5,600 ft. (calscape.org).
