What to Know About Postpartum Bleeding or Lochia?
The postpartum treatment brings a lot of changes in a woman’s body. A common occurrence after childbirth is postpartum bleeding, which is often referred to as lochia. Understanding what causes this bleeding and consulting with a gynecology obstetrician at The New Town Clinic, can help you feel at ease during your recovery.
What Is Lochia?
Lochia is the post-delivery discharge similar to a menstrual period. It contains blood, uterine lining, mucus and white blood cells. Initially, the blood is bright red, changing to pink or brown and then to white or yellowish over four to six weeks.
Postpartum Bleeding Patterns
After a vaginal delivery, expect bright red blood with small clots initially. By fourth to seventh day, the discharge colour lightens. This eventually turns into white or yellow colour by the end of the first week. For those who had a C-section, bleeding may be lighter but follows a similar colour progression like vaginal delivery.
When to Call Your Doctor
Keep your bleeding in check. Contact your obstetrician if:
1. The pad is thoroughly soaked with blood in less than an hour
2. You notice foul-smelling discharge, fever or chills
3. Bleeding remains heavy and bright red beyond the second week
