tip of the day from the lock ninja
When a lock starts sticking or becoming difficult to turn, avoid using WD-40 or oil-based lubricants.
These attract dust and dirt, which will gum up the mechanism and make things worse over time.
Instead, use a dry lubricant like graphite powder or a silicone-based spray specifically designed for locks.
Simply puff a small amount of graphite powder into the keyway, insert your key a few times to work it in, and wipe away any excess.
This will lubricate the pins and springs without creating a sticky residue.
If your key is starting to stick, it might also be worn down - check if you have burrs or rough edges on the key itself, which you can carefully smooth with a fine file.
Sometimes the problem isn't the lock at all, but simply a worn key that needs replacing.
