How to Detect Slab Leak Warning Signs The first clue is often your water bill. If usage jumps and your household habits have not changed, something may be leaking out of sight. One unusually high bill does not always mean a slab leak, but a steady increase deserves attention. You may also hear water moving when the house is quiet. If faucets are off, appliances are not running, and toilets are not refilling, that faint rushing or dripping sound should not be there. In a slab leak, water can travel below the foundation and create noise that seems to come from the floor or walls. Floor temperature changes can also tell you a lot. A hot water line leak may create a warm area on tile, hardwood, or concrete. Some homeowners notice one patch of floor that feels oddly heated even when the HVAC system is off. Cold water line leaks are harder to feel, but you may still notice dampness, staining, or flooring that starts to warp. Cracks in flooring or walls are another possible sign. Not every crack means a slab leak, especially in areas with dry soil movement and normal settling. But when cracking shows up alongside moisture, mold smell, or unexplained water use, the pieces start to point in the same direction. A musty odor is also common. Water trapped under flooring or inside nearby materials creates the kind of damp smell that lingers. If a room smells wet but you cannot find a visible source, the leak may be below the surface.
