Big winter weather is headed our way, and while septic systems are built to handle cold temps, extreme conditions can cause problems if you’re not prepared.
A few quick tips to protect your septic system during and after a winter storm:
✔️ Leave snow in place over your septic tank and drain field — it acts as natural insulation
✔️ Avoid driving or parking over the septic area (compacted snow = deeper freezing)
✔️ Use water normally, but avoid heavy water use all at once
✔️ Direct gutters and sump pumps away from the drain field to prevent saturation during snowmelt
✔️ Mark your tank lids so they’re easy to find if service is needed
✔️ If your system uses a pump, limit water use during power outages
🚨 Call a pro if you notice: slow drains, sewage odors, gurgling toilets, or wet spots in the yard.
