I do not recommend Sumner Animal Hospital.
After multiple visits involving long wait times, minimal treatment, condescending and disrespectful behavior from front desk staff and extremely high pricing, my most recent experience with my kitten was deeply alarming and disturbing.
The day he was neutered at our routine vet office, he began showing what I believed were signs of an adverse reaction to the medications administered. I requested overnight hospitalization At Sumner Animal Hospital and was quoted $970. I initially declined due to cost but shortly after verbally agreed because I felt he needed professional monitoring due his condition. I was then told hospitalization was “not medically necessary” and that he would instead be boarded in a private room with “visual entertainment,” with staff checks after being properly medicated with his prescribed Gabapentin. I agreed to this due to another pet in the home being boarded post surgery with the same expectation of being in a private room, and that pet did ok.
When I arrived to see if I felt he was safe to come home, he was not in a private room. He was confined to a small kennel in a crowded area full of other cats that smelled absolutely disgusting. The conditions were deplorable and unacceptable. He was violently thrashing, repeatedly slamming his head against the walls of the tiny space, covered in medication that had clearly not been properly administered, and in obvious distress. The food I provided was untouched, despite being assured he had eaten a late night meal and breakfast- they stated around 3/4 of both and they denied feeding their food.
Once home, I noticed his condition had worsened overnight, he was there for less than 24 hours. He had a drooping left eye, burst blood vessels in the right eye, and was hot to the touch.
When I called for answers, staff admitted they had no explanation for his condition and said they would “talk to their staff,” offering no accountability.
I immediately took him to another emergency hospital, where he was diagnosed with an adverse drug reaction and a fever — conditions Sumner had dismissed as merely “pain” during their exam.
Based on his condition, I genuinely believe he would have died had I not physically checked on him.
The lack of proper monitoring, misrepresentation of care, and poor communication make this facility unsafe for emergency or boarding services. I strongly advise against using them if you care about your pets.
