What should you pay attention to when viewing homes for purchase? The neighborhood. . .is the neighborhood filled with homes that look well maintained? There will be exceptions but generally if the homes look nice, its a sign that the homeowners are happy there and financially stable. Yours may be the prettiest home in the neighborhood, but if you must drive past neglected properties every day, it's not going to make you happy and will affect resale. The smell. . .cigarette smoke, mold, strange or strong cooking odors, sewer odors. Generally you want a pleasant but not overwhelming smell. Mold odors are a red flag and even strong scents from air fresheners may be hiding something. Be cautious, investigate further. The Light. . .most of us prefer bright and cheerful. Unfortunately, many sellers forget that "staging" or lack of is a potential deal killer. A dark home with all the blinds closed and curtains drawn, it's not an inviting space. Open the blinds while you are previewing the home. Space. . .square footage is just a number. What you really need to understand is (a) is there sufficient or desirable space for daily living and entertaining and (b) will your furnishings work in the space.
