Road Work Update:
Highway 140 - At our June 18 meeting, the BOC awarded a contract to expand the intersection of Hwy 140 at Hickory/Batesville Roads, similar to the project completed last year at East Cherokee Drive. This is part of the county’s effort to make interim improvements to Hwy 140 to keep it functioning until the state can four-lane it, beginning in 2035. This intersection improvement will cost $5.8 million, with $2 million coming from the state and the balance from county SPLOST funds. Work will begin within the next few weeks and could last as much as a year. We’re in the design phase for another Hwy 140 interim improvement, this one to expand the intersection at Univeter Road. We have an application pending for federal construction funds via the Atlanta Regional Commission. The state is currently adding a two-way-left-turn lane in the stretch along Avery Road.
Bells Ferry Road - We’re down to the final parcel to complete about $18 million in right-of-way acquisition to four-lane Bells Ferry Road from the current end just north of Kellog Creek Road up to Victoria Road. The state has agreed to pay the approximately $30 million in construction costs and plans to award that contract this fall. The state has also agreed to replace the narrow Little River Bridge on Bells Ferry Road with a wider bridge if the county acquires the ROW for that project.
