OUR DISCOVERIES ARE HELPING THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE AROUND THE WORLD. A high concentration of indolepropionic acid in the serum protects against type 2 diabetes, shows a new study from the University of Eastern Finland. Indolepropionic acid is a metabolite produced by intestinal bacteria, and its production is boosted by a fibre-rich diet. This provides additional insight into the role of intestinal bacteria in the interplay between diet, metabolism and health.

This recently published study findings (Nature Scientific Reports, 2017) were based on our discovery that INDOLE-3-PROPIONIC ACID a.k.a IPA (produced by c. sporogenes, an intestinal bacteria) IS A POWERFUL CELL PROTECTIVE MOLECULE (Pappolla et al JBC, 1999). Thank you to the authors in Finland for recognizing our earlier findings in this important publication and congratulations on this new and exciting discovery. I can't wait to see the (inverse) association with neurodegenerative disease! (IPA is present also in CSF and brain).

NEWSFLASH UPDATE. IPA is moving to the clinics. An FDA approved phase 1 clinical trial has been completed late in 2016 at 4 institutions (Emory University, University of Miami, UCLA and University of Iowa) on a population of patients with Friedrieich's ataxia. IPA also inhibits aggregation of amyloid in the brain. The trial showed that IPA is safe when administered to humans and opens numerous possibilities, on disease prevention.
