The Ancient Shri Dharanatha Swamy Temple (ಪುರಾತನ ಶ್ರೀ ಧಾರಾನಾಥ ಸ್ವಾಮಿ ದೇವಸ್ಥಾನ), also known as Dhareshwar, is a significant historical and spiritual site located near Kumta in the Uttara Kannada district of Karnataka.
Historical and Mythological Significance
Atma-Linga Connection: The temple is revered as one of the five Pancha Kshetras (holy sites) related to the legend of the Atma-Linga from Gokarna. According to mythology, when Ravana tried to uproot the Atma-Linga, various pieces fell in different locations; the string (dhoura) that bound the Linga is said to have fallen here, giving the place the name "Dhareshwar".
Age and Construction: The temple is approximately 800 years old. While its origins are ancient, records indicate that construction was initiated by Rudroji Pandit and completed by Sonappa between 1500 and 1559 AD.
Inscriptions: The temple houses four ancient inscribed tablets that provide historical context to its development.
Architectural Features
Structure: Built using black stone, the temple walls are adorned with intricate sculptures and artistic carvings.
Sacred Pools (Pancha Teerthas): The temple complex is surrounded by five holy water bodies: Rudra Kund, Chakra, Shankh, Vasudha, and Nagatirth.
Sanctum: To reach the main deity, worshippers must descend several steps into a clean and divine sanctum.
