Ty is a man of integrity, which is hard to find in the landscaping arena. He gives a fair price; his crew works hard and they did a fantastic job.
The background for our problem, briefly, is that we just moved in last year (2024) and the main thing we needed to fix with the house was the backyard. It was graded towards the house and putting pressure on the foundation. There were cracks beginning to form and if we fixed the yard soon, we wouldn’t have to worry about foundation issues. The backyard was a hot mess: a slab of concrete was split down the middle; the hillside was a jungle; the patio was warped and full of weeds; there were nice raised planting beds taking up a lot of space (but I tend to kill plants) and so the whole thing was not very useful. I had 4 contractors give me bids and Ty was one of them.
Now, at the time, Ty was my second choice because another guy gave us an offer that was too good to be true (price similar, but more detailed plan with more elements/delineation of space). We hired that guy, he excavated the yard, put in a huge retaining wall and a smaller one to divide two patios and then said we had to wait through winter. He was then unwilling to complete the project in the spring and wouldn’t give our money back. So then we needed to hire a new contractor to finish the project.
The main question: how can we make sure we find someone who isn’t going to also take advantage of us, since we are in a vulnerable spot?
I asked Ty to come out and give us an estimate for finishing the job. I also asked two other new contractors (who had not seen it originally). Ty gave the best price and was willing to use as much of what was useable as possible (other guys needed to restart certain elements so they could guarantee the work for X # of years).
Ty and crew were great. Noah and Emmanuel worked on grading and laying the two patios. They worked hard every time they came out. Crew also discovered some parts that the previous contractor did wrong (ie no anchor pins in the retaining wall he built, etc) that were safety concerns and worked with us to solve them. The last two days, Ty and the whole crew came out and kicked butt. They worked hard in 90+ degree weather so they could finish up. He didn’t ask me for any money other than the initial deposit until the whole job was completed, even with crazy summer weather causing delays. We are very pleased with our yard and would highly recommend SPL to anyone looking for a hardscape contractor.
