March is “Wildfire Prevention Month” in MS. The proclamation highlights the importance of wildfire prevention and every Mississippian's critical role in safeguarding the state’s forests.
March typically sees an increase in wildfire incidents in MS due to dry vegetation, windy conditions, and the seasonal transition. Wildfire Prevention Month is a timely reminder of the shared responsibility to reduce these risks and prevent potential disasters. Most wildfires are accidental and can often be easily avoided.
MFC, the state agency responsible for monitoring, detecting, and suppressing wildfires around the clock, works tirelessly to protect lives, homes, and natural resources. In 2024, MFC wildland firefighters responded to more than 2,502 wildfires, burning over 51,982 acres. Thanks to wildland firefighters and their partners, over 3,886 were spared from destruction in the fiscal year 2024.
