Chronic Bad Breath
Do you suffer from chronic bad breath, or halitosis? You’re not alone - it is estimated that about 1 in 4 people have this issue. Fortunately, there are ways to tackle it! Let’s explore what causes chronic bad breath and discuss some tips for combatting it.
Bad breath is caused by the release of certain gases that are created when bacteria in your mouth break down proteins and carbohydrates. Poor dental hygiene can make bad breath worse; if food particles remain stuck between teeth, they will start to rot and cause an unpleasant smell. Smoking and drinking alcohol are also known contributors to bad breath.
Other possible causes of bad breath include dry mouth, sinus infections (in which case a doctor should be consulted immediately), tonsil stones, cavities or gum disease (in which case an appointment with a dentist is necessary).
Fortunately, there are steps you can take to reduce the unpleasant odor of your breath! One great place to start is with good oral hygiene habits. Brush twice a day with a toothpaste containing fluoride and floss daily - this will help get rid of food particles that may be stuck in your teeth and causing the issue. Additionally, use an antiseptic mouthwash regularly to help kill off any lingering bacteria in your mouth. If you wear dentures or retainers, make sure you clean them daily as well!
