I worked with Jeff from Smith Bespoke out of Chicago over the past year. Jeff was informative, polite and professional. Jeff also took the time to explain various facets of tailoring to me to help me begin my journey in custom clothing. He was also kind and professional to my wife.
I've had several garments made from Smith Bespoke. A suit, a sports jacket, jeans, shirts and a few garments for my wife. We found the effort to be outstanding but the quality to be lackluster for the price point.
Specifically, and to provide a few examples:
1. My grey custom suit jacket lining began to fray after only 4 times of wearing it.
2. My green sports jacket (which I absolutely love), didn't have the pockets unsown for use upon delivery.
2. I ordered two pairs of custom jeans from Smith Bespoke. Love the jeans, however the fit was different between both pairs (on the back side of the jean. The length was perfect however.)
3. I spent a tremendous amount of time with Smith Bespoke (Jeff) on shirts. I have a preference for how I like my shirts made when I'm wearing them untucked (including button placement) vs tucked and a third option which is where I intend to wear a tie (which isn't very often). We met multiple times in order to ensure the shirts were fit to my desires. Upon delivery of the final shirt, not only was it not close to my specifications, but I had to notice the issues on my own (specifically the neck button closure), as it wasn't even close to what I had ordered.
KEY NOTE: Jeff immediately said that I could keep this shirt free of charge, and ordered me a replacement shirt. I thank him for that.
4. I was about to order a third pair of jeans and when I was invoiced, I noticed that the price had increased by $15 vs my previous invoices. When I pointed this out, I was told that the costs had gone up last year, and essentially that the pricing was correct. My issue with this of course however is it is yet another "little" thing that I had to catch that wasn't communicated to me prior to receiving the invoice and it very much felt like "being nickled and dimed".
I spent nearly $7,000 in a single year Smith Bespoke in 2022 (between my wife and I) and I was surprised by the fact that there were multiple occasions where price fluctuation occurred and I had to question it.
Overall, I think Smith Bespoke is an "OK to good" value for anyone interested in custom clothing. That being said, as one gets more educated (all-be-it) on the quality of clothing, the way that made-to-measure works vs bespoke, etc. it becomes more difficult to not become frustrated with "the little things" that seem to stack up.
Given the amount of time and money that I spent with the company, the pending money that I was about to spend, I'm deeply concerned that I was surprised by and ultimately let down by a $15 change in pricing that wasn't communicated to me and the little details that were getting missed (which I'm intentionally paying to not miss). It wasn't even about the price, it was about the little details that Smith Bespoke just kept getting wrong.
Finally, this is made to measure in China, not a true bespoke experience. Smith Bespoke is not a tailor. They are tailor sales associates whom are well versed in tailoring sales, but ultimately send off their work to shops in China. Now, in fairness to Smith Bespoke, there is absolutely nothing wrong with Made to Measure. It's a fantastic option for people whom are just getting into custom clothing. That being said, if you're considering these items, you should understand the difference as the word "bespoke" is starting to be used a little to easily in todays world IMHO.
Unfortunately, I'm now forced to look for another tailor. In the end, this felt very "penny wise and pound foolish".
That said, I wish Smith Bespoke the best and hope that they start fixing these issues.
