This was an interesting afternoon last week!
A very large old Ash failed last year, and fell directly across a private pathway. With no access for large machinery to assist, we diligently set to work with nothing but a big a saw, a couple of wedges and something to hit them with!
Fallen trees can be extremely tricky to deal with. The key is judging where the weight of the trunk is supported, as one cut to far can mean getting the chainsaw bar jammed between several tonnes of timber. But as usual, we got this one spot on. Removing some large chunks to prop up the stump side first, meant that when the Final Cut through was made, the stump only moved a few centimetres. We then tidied off both sides to allow plenty of access.
Although there was probably close to £1000 worth of firewood in the tree, all the timber will be left as even more valuable habitat for the local wildlife.
