Phoenix Officer Hit by DUI Suspect At Scene of Deadly Crash in South Phoenix
A police officer was injured by a suspected impaired driver while attempting to secure the scene of an earlier accident in South Phoenix this week.
Around midnight a 25 year old pedestrian was struck by a vehicle while attempting to cross Southern Avenue in a dark area near 30th Avenue, according to police. She was declared deceased at the scene. The driver cooperated with law enforcement, and intoxication is not suspected.
Over an hour later, while officers were still investigating the accident, another vehicle collided with a parked Phoenix police SUV that was blocking Southern Avenue. The officer inside was not seriously injured, but was nonetheless transported to a local hospital as a precaution. The 21 year old driver, was arrested after failing a sobriety test, according to the police.
When DUI involves an injury, the charge will be elevated to Aggrevated DUI or Felony DUI. Prison terms of 1 1/2 - 3 yrs and fines of up to $150,000 are likely even for a first time DUI offense.
