Science-fiction authors, Elon Musk, and others have been promising full-self-driving autonomous cars for years and insisting robotaxis are just around the corner, but where does the technology really stand? The next generation of GM’s Super Cruise Level 2-plus system (available now on 15 nameplates for use on 750,000 miles of North American highway) will seek to extend Level 2 support (eyes still on the road) to 95 percent of driving scenarios. This upgrade, originally billed as Ultra Cruise, will use the Qualcomm Snapdragon Ride Platform to interpret signals from cameras, short- and long-range radar, and lidar. It was to launch this year on Cadillac’s Celestiq, but difficulties at autonomy subsidiary Cruise delayed timing.
