Scaling occurs when minerals such as calcium and magnesium precipitate out of the water, usually when heated, and adhere to surfaces within your plumbing, water heating systems or appliances. A rock-like scale builds up on metal surfaces which can cause a restriction in flow and can lessen the efficiency and shorten the life of appliances such as your water heater and dishwasher.
