The silver lining of Covid is the acceleration of the use or modernization of technology. Not only are more of us individually using video software to connect with each other but government services have been improved eg seeing your GP and even attending court by video. I predict that many of the changes will stay given the improved efficiencies and convenience.

For example, the Provincial Court recently changed the rule that in-person attendance was the default requirement, now requiring most interim, pre-trial court appearances to be by video using MS TEAMS.

This change, to video appearances being the default method, was just one of several recent changes to the Provincial Court rules, process and forms as a result of the feedback from several pilot projects in recent years. The family court process now separates the longer process for parents with several issues to resolve from urgent matters like the need for a protection order or to stop a child from being taken away without the consent of both parents.

Other changes have improved the chance of parenting issues being resolved by agreement, as encouraged by the 2013 Family Law Act, rather than by a trial.

Another good example of the technology improvements is the Federal website providing parenting after separation courses: www.familieschange.ca
