The traditional form of retainer for a lawyer is when your lawyer represents you instead of you representing yourself.
When you are represented by a lawyer then the lawyer for the opposing party, and other third parties like collection agencies, are not allowed to contact you directly.
Many people choose to represent themselves (eg DIY) to save money, but you lose the benefits of having both legal advice and objective advice about your pragmatic choices.
Being human, we often focus on feelings over facts when, of course, it is the facts which decide the legal result.
In addition to a traditional retainer where we represent and advise you, we also offer a limited-scope retainer, called DIY Support Services.
The downside of DIY is that you are responsible for all decisions etc. It is like doing your own electrical work when you are not a qualified electrician – you can make your problems much bigger and more expensive to fix later.
