REVENGE PORN PENALTIES
Many people now know about the growing problem of "revenge porn" where someone posts to the internet "intimate images" without permission. There are finally several remedies in Canada.
First, the Criminal Code of Canada (CCC) section 162.1 provides a penalty of up to five years in prison. All criminal charges require a police report and evidence can disappear so the quicker you report the concern to the police the better.
Plus, as of 29 January 2024, the BC Intimate Images Protection Act (IIPA) [SBC 2023] Chapter 11 came into force so you can apply for a civil remedy not just a criminal penalty, so that you can apply for not just an order for the images to be removed but also for the wrongdoer to pay penalties and damages.
In addition, one can apply not just to the Supreme Court but to the Civil Tribunal (CRT) which makes it very easy to make a complaint online for not just an order to remove unauthorized images but to obtain penalties and damages. See
