What are the key signs of European hornets?
Wasps are plentiful in the late summer and fall. They come in all sorts of shapes, sizes and colors. They also have a wide variety of nests in shape and size. What are the signs of European hornets?
-Color-
European hornets have red, brown, and yellow on their heads that distinguish them from yellow jackets and paper wasps. The distinguishing black and red-brown coloring continues onto the thorax.
-Size-
Size is always difficult to tell especially when they are not side by side for comparison, but European hornets can be 1-1.5 inches long. Most wasp species of more similar color will be under ¾ or ½ inch.
-Nest-
Their size is similar to the bald-faced hornet as well as their nest. The bald-faced hornet however is black and white. The European hornet nest is not free-hanging like the bald-faced hornet and tends to be more tan than gray.
