The common paper wasp makes its single-comb, umbrella-shaped nests out of a combination of salivary secretions and paper-like substance made of finely chewed plant and wood fibers (cellulose). From spring on, the female workers feed the larvae and spread the nest while the queens deposit the eggs. However, they also eat nectar from flowers for their own nutrition. The workers collect protein to feed the nest.
