“Dad, there is a mouse in the house!” are some of the most dreaded words in the winter. Why are they worse in the winter? Well, colder temperatures and the possibility of snow accumulation make the process of hunting for entry points all the more miserable.
In this instance, I was relieved to find out that the mouse being referenced was already dead. This meant that some of my control measures had done their job. It was still unnerving to know that the home had been infiltrated, but at least things had been halted without stress.
I instantly went into mouse mode and started to wonder at how it got in. Without the use of tracking powder which would be unreasonable to have in place off of the time, it is hard to know whether I need to discover its entry point or tell the kids to close the door. I thought of all the instances over the last few weeks where the door had been left open while children were eagerly awaiting dad hugs after work. I think followed up that thought with the recollection of me standing at the door wide open while I chatted with an old friend who stopped by to drop off some holiday treats. We were all guilty of this.
