How big are ticks?
Spring is in full force. So is tick season. Here is a quick review of the common tick-borne pathogens:
· Lyme Disease
· Anaplasmosis
· Babesia
· Ehrlichia
· Tularemia
· Powassan
· Heartland
· STARI
· Rickettsia parkeri
· TBRF
· 364D rickettsiosis
· Alpha-gal syndrome (meat allergy)
This is a long enough list to warrant sufficient care and protection of loved ones this year.
It is vitally important that you and your loved ones:
· wear proper protective clothing
· inspect regularly
· reduce opportunities for ticks to get established in your yard
When inspecting for ticks, keep in mind that an adult tick is about the size of a watermelon seed. More importantly, ticks that transmit diseases may be as small as a poppy seed or sesame seed. This should help dial in inspections and help set the appropriate level of awareness.
