Remember the kid that used to eat glue in class? Was that you, or did that gross you out? Whichever side of the equation you were on, I am guessing you don’t put a bottle of Elmer’s out with the condiments for your food centered get togethers. The interesting thing about this glue consumption quirk is that it may be one of our closest ties to silverfish.
Silverfish are fast creatures that depend on starches to survive. Their speed is essential because of their lack of defenses against natural predators. When you do see them, they are typically scrambling to or from a water source (they depend on high humidity and moisture levels), to or from a hiding place, or to or from their food source.
What kinds of starches do silverfish eat? They are happy with:
· Paper
· Glue
· Shaving cream
· Parts of dead bugs
· Toothpaste
· Fabric
· Pasta (finally, some other point of commonality)
Despite a few shared points of interest, we should not be interested in sharing our living and working spaces with silverfish. If you start to see them, reduce humidity. If they persist, call the silverfish whisperers at Rove Pest Control to finalize the eviction.
