A lot of older homes and buildings in Horry County that were built as far back as the 1940's into the early 1970's were plumbed with cast iron. A lot of them still have cast iron today. The age of cast iron if still in place are likely to be "pitted" on the inside. This pitting causes the paper and discharges to become clogged or lodged in the pipe itself due to the lack of flow and the ridges of the pitting catching the paper and discharges. Cast iron can also crack with age with the lack of proper support and age itself. Most all the pipes (trap arms) tied to the cast iron vertical stacks in the walls are galvanized drainage piping. These with age become rusted and deteriorated. (bottom right)
It is possible and at times necessary to remove these cast iron and galvanized drain pipes and replace with new PVC DWV.
