We often talk about the fourth trimester in terms of a mom’s recovery. But those first 12 weeks after birth are just as important for the baby. While it’s not a formal medical term for infants, the “fourth trimester” helps us understand how newborns adjust to life outside the womb. Think of it as a period of continued development—just happening outside the body now instead of inside.
