The organization of this event was absolutely unacceptable. My granddaughter ran the half marathon, and it was clear from start to finish that the runners were not a priority.
Bib pickup took over 2.5 hours—completely unreasonable. There wasn’t enough seating for runners before the race, which meant many were left standing around unnecessarily. Shuttles dropped participants off an hour early, only to leave them waiting with limited space and not enough places to sit. Bathroom lines were out of control, and people were at risk of missing their start time because there simply weren’t enough restrooms. That is basic race planning, and it was completely mishandled.
The situation with bib transfers was even more frustrating. My granddaughter’s friend had to withdraw due to injury and tried to transfer her bib on April 14—before the stated April 15 deadline. She was denied. The explanation? Too many people signed up and not enough dropped out. That’s not the runner’s problem—that’s poor planning.
What makes this worse is that the organization had apparently moved the bin transfer deadline up to April 10, yet continued sending emails on April 14 saying the deadline was April 15 (see photo attached). How are participants supposed to follow rules that you keep changing without clear communication?
After paying nearly $100, runners deserved far better than this level of disorganization. Participants should not be penalized for an event that was clearly oversold and poorly managed.
This was a frustrating, disappointing experience. Do better, Rhode Races.
