If you’ve ever attended a graveside service of a Veteran, you know it’s a moving experience. The silence between each shot fired in unison.
That feeling you get in your tummy as the taps play.
The flag that somehow gets folded into that perfect triangle and placed onto the lap of the next of kin.
It always appears as a flawless succession, no matter how cold, windy, rainy, or snowy it is. Who are these men and women who visit quietly as they wait for the family to arrive? Most often, these are local veterans themselves. Who volunteer their time to make these services happen.
They do it because they want to honor their fellow brothers and sisters. They do it because, though their formal duty is long over, they still want to find ways to serve others.
For Veteran’s Day this year, I encourage you to go a little bit further than “Thanking a Veteran.” Find one, sit down with them, and visit with them. Listen to them and recognize how extraordinary they are. And thank them for all the ways they keep serving long after their service to our country has been done.
Big Thanks to our local legion members who do so much for our community:
