The Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) – the gold standard for water damage restoration – classifies water contamination into three critical categories:
Category 1: Clean Water
Source: Sanitary water supplies, burst pipes, melting snow
Risk Level: Low immediate threat
Example: Overflowing bathtub with clean water
Category 2: Grey Water (Sullage)
Source: Washing machines, dishwashers, showers, bathroom sinks
Risk Level: Moderate contamination with chemicals and bacteria
Characteristics: Cloudy appearance, unpleasant odor, potential illness if ingested
Category 3: Black Water
Source: Sewage, toilet overflows, contaminated floodwater
Risk Level: Extremely hazardous, life-threatening pathogens
Requires immediate professional hazmat-level restoration
