Here’s a nasty little secret of the IV world: Most IV clinics do not mix under a vent hood.
Don’t believe us? Go to any drip clinic’s social page to see a video of how they mix their bags. You may see them hanging in a work room or sitting on a counter, but you probably will not see them under a vent hood.
What’s the big deal? The USP recommends that when mixing more than two IV ingredients together (the saline bag counts as ingredient #1) a vent hood is needed to prevent contamination. And when those ingredients are going straight into your blood stream, contamination can be dangerous.
